Global Campus - world wide education initiative

Global Campus
world wide education initiative
http://www.tamera.org/index.php?id=698&L=0
As members of a global society each one of us arrives to the questions of how best can we contribute to creating not only a world without war, but also a world where we live in profound peace, in truth and trust, and intelligent compassion towards all beings that live on earth.
In the present world situation these questions have never been more timely or urgent than now. Everyday we are given numerous examples of how the world is no longer able to sustain the methods of living, thinking and acting that we, as human beings, have become so accustomed to.
The aim of the Global Campus is to provide a significant contribution to developing knowledge and experience that can actively answer those questions. Drawing on contemporary expertise in all-encompassing and sustainable themes the Global Campus offers a globally reaching education program that is relevant not only to our present situation, but most importantly, to our peaceful future. One part of its vision is that the Global Campus will affect and contribute to a major shift in the knowledge and experiential structures of humanity.

Creating Models

The uniqueness of the Global Campus is that the education programmes are based within intentional models of social living – actively developed and developing social models whose aims are to create inclusive, all-encompassing and nonviolent forms of living. These models are gradually being built up around the world and will provide a profound education in all areas of life: community knowledge, sustainable technologies, ecology, permaculture, conflict resolution, peaceful dialogue, and political spirituality. Particular focus is given to developing peaceful relations between the genders.

The first base camp of the Global Campus is the peace research centre Tamera which, in 2010, will provide peace education for approximately 200 international students. Parallel to this, the project is supporting education programmes and training in Colombia (San Jose de Apartado), Palestine (The Holy Land Trust), Brazil (Favela da Paz), United States and Europe (Switzerland, Germany, Portugal).

Scholarship Fund

Each year the amount of peace workers from crisis and impoverished areas of the world who wish to take part in the education programmes offered at Tamera are greatly increasing. For many, the relevant, profound and complex education and training offer the possibility not only of a change in perspective for their own lives, but also very real solutions for their families, neighbourhoods, communities and organisations. Knowledge and training is empowerment, and for those who experience the very daily reality of conflict and violence it is also a matter of survival. Building autonomous models that do not destroy, but instead support the regeneration of our planet and us as human beings is an essential element.
We thank all those peace workers who have committed themselves already to completing the Monte Cerro peace education.
To support more and more peace workers from crisis areas to take part in this education we need financial support.

How you can Support

There are many ways in which you can financial support a student to study at the Global Campus Tamera. This includes regular monthly or annual donations to general Scholarship Fund or donations to specific students.
For more information please contact the coordinator of the Scholarship Fund:
Kate Bunney: klbunney.igf(at)tamera.org

“Favela Da Paz” - Future Sounds from São Paulo

“Favela Da Paz” - Future Sounds from São Paulo
Support the Global Campus education for the peace band “Poesia Samba Soul” in Tamera

“Many of my friends don't exist any more. I'm searching for something more attractive than violence, so that the youth no longer takes part in the drug war”, says Claudio Miranda about the reason for his work. He comes from Jardim Ângela, one of the favelas (Slums) of São Paulo, which the UN declared in the 90's as one of the most brutal neighbourhoods of the world. More than twenty years ago he began to gather friends to make music with cans; at this time real instruments were unreachable.

Today they are running the successful band Poesia Samba Soul and a cultural project which offers hundreds of young people the possibility to learn instruments and to get to know a life perspective beyond drugs and violence. Poesia Samba Soul has established the only studio in the slums of this city where young bands can record their own music. They educate youth in music, video production and design. The band members themselves teach. They show young people a way to express themselves through arts, music and poetry instead of through violence.

In summer 2009 Claudio Miranda came to Tamera for the first time and enchanted many people with his authentic and warm way of making music. Through the new experience of community and the exchange with peace workers from all over the world, the vision grew within him to create a peace community in the middle of the slums, as he calls it, a “favela da paz” (slum of peace). In Tamera, he envisioned first greening his neighbourhood and giving it an artistic design. Back home, he was immediately offered exactly such a project, including the youth, by the city of São Paulo, and other offers of support. Unexpectedly, he had suddenly become a magnet for the manifestation of his vision. A great hope awoke in his group and they started to see their work in the global context of a newly arising planetary community. In moments of danger, it has been his vision which suddenly gave Claudio trust where there was fear before.

During his participation in the Global Campus meeting in the Colombian peace community San José de Apartadó in the beginning of 2010, his vision ripened further. Claudio is convinced that “If we succeed in transforming a place that is known for its brutality into a place of living peace, then all of Brazil will start to listen attentively and will want to do the same.”

At the center of the vision of the “favela da paz“ stands a human community of solidarity and trust. This is why he started to enter into building community amongst his team. Now they need education in Tamera in order to take next steps. Four of the eight main responsible members of the band want to come to Tamera for the Monte Cerro Peace Education for three months, starting in May. The Monte Cerro Peace Education in Tamera is a basic education course in the framework of the Global Campus, an arising international university that educates its students in the knowledge needed to build new models for peace: knowledge about creating community, political theory and technology.

It order to make their education possible, we urgently ask for financial support.

In total, we need 11,000€:
Four flights São Paulo-Lisbon-São Paulo and transportation: approx. € 4000,-
Participation and stay in the Monte Cerro Peace Education for four persons for three months: € 6400,-
pocket money: € 600,-

Tamera - Test Field for a New Culture, Summer University 2010, 26th July - 4th August

Tamera - Test Field for a New Culture
Summer University 2010, 26th July - 4th August

Think Tank for Global Peace Work and Building Community

There is a movement growing worldwide: People are leaving their ways of life and their careers, which they no longer find meaningful. Young people are stepping out of the race of fear and competition, they no longer share the values of a culture made up of lies. They resist peacefully against the big destructive projects of globalisation. They are looking for a new way of living, for new professions, for a different life, for peace among them and a peaceful cooperation with nature. They found meeting places and share new aims. In crisis areas, farmers and refugees come together in peace villages and communities, often risking their lives in order to do so. They all are doing it because they feel that another world is possible.

Now, all these people and groups need knowledge about how this different world could look like. They need the exchange and cooperation with those who have worked and researched for its foundations for a long time.

For a future without war is really possible! A reconciliation of the human being with itself can succeed, even today. In some places on Earth, a civilisation of peace and cooperation, of ecological and social sustainability is being prepared.

The Peace Research Center Tamera in Portugal is a test field for a new culture, a model community working on technological, ecological and social answers for global challenges. 15 years after its foundation, you can study and experience here the basic knowledge for a life without war and separation, for cooperation with nature, for community and peace between the genders.

Learning and Helping in the Permaculture Landscape

Learning and Helping in the Permaculture Landscape
May 3 – September 30, 2010

We invite you for a practical cooperation in creating a permaculture landscape running from May till the end of September.

We have big plans. Big plans that make the heart beat with joy and excitement, since our times require big steps for healing to occur.

In cooperation with permaculture specialist Sepp Holzer, a water landscape is emerging here in Tamera, surrounded by permaculture gardens as a model for landscape healing.

The intention of our work is to once again step into cooperation with nature through being in contact with the plants, the animals and the inherent dream of the land.

"Holzer's Permaculture is landscape design in a larger context to correct the mistakes of the past, to enable the symbioses of mutual effects, to let nature and time do its work, to reestablish natural cycles." (Sepp Holzer)

For people interested in practical work, we are offering the possibility (during summertime) to collaborate in creating self sufficiency in the permacultural system; working with fruit, vegetables, spices and seeds. At the same time this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the basic thoughts of Tamera.

Embedded in a professional team you are given insights into the main project areas and research questions of peace work.

Warm welcome!

The Ecology Team
